Preoperative differentiation between noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP) and non-NIFTP

Abstract: Noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features lacks malignant US features and is better triaged using US-CNB than using US-FNA to facilitate the surgical management. US evaluation is pivotal in determining the next step of FVPTC management.

“…US evaluation is pivotal in determining the next step of FV PTC management. In a previous study, central nodal metastasis was identified in only one of 34 NIFTP cases (2.9%), none of which exhibited distant metastasis or recurrence [44,45]. Infiltrative FV PTCs are not overlooked when the current system for detecting thyroid nodules based on US features is used.…”

“…These studies will also allow a reevaluation of the reproducibility and robustness of the diagnostic criteria for NIFTP. This need is highlighted by 2 recent studies reporting single cases diagnosed as NIFTP with regional lymph node metastasis 21, 23. The NIFTP diagnostic errors may occur in both follicular and papillary lineage directions.…”
