Preoperative Chemotherapy and Metronomic Scheduling of Chemotherapy in Locally Advanced Oral Cancers

Abstract: Locally advanced oral cavity cancers are treated with a multi-modality approach. Surgery is the most efficient local modality in comparison to chemoradiation in oral cancers. Preoperative chemotherapy has failed its expectations to improve disease-free survival or overall survival in resectable oral cancers. Its use as an organ preservation tool is being studied. Induction chemotherapy followed by assessment for surgery is an appropriate option for borderline resectable or technically unresectable oral cancer.… Show more

“…47 However, induction chemotherapy did not improve OS or disease-specific survival in patients with unresectable oral cancers. 48 PSM is a useful method which can be used to generate a balanced cohort. Kuramatsu et al created baseline characteristics of patients with cerebellar intracerebral hemorrhage using PSM 49 which has been applied by Son et al in their study published in The New England Journal of Medicine.…”

“…The standard strategy for advanced OSCC comprises a multidisciplinary approach including radical surgery and postoperative radiotherapy with or without systemic chemotherapy. However, the present patient received neoadjuvant chemotherapy with docetaxel-cisplatin-5-fluorouracil [15, 16] because of the waiting time for surgery [17]. Owing to the locally advanced tumor, postoperative radiotherapy concurrent with platinum-based chemotherapy was planned for the present patient.…”

“…Although TNM stage may provide a hint as to whether the tumor is resectable or not, it should not serve as the only tool to In general, the studies in locally advanced oral cavity cancers are limited and suffer from low statistical power mostly as a result of mixing these patients with other HNCs. 16 In this review, we summarized the relevant studies in a categorical fashion based on resectability and treatment modalities. Palliative treatment including RT is often used for symptom control and is beyond the purpose of this review.…”
