Preoperative characteristics and intraoperative transfusion and vasopressor requirements in patients with low vs. high MELD scores

Abstract: Recent changes in organ allocation based on the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) prioritize the most ill patients on the waiting list for liver transplantation. While patients undergoing liver transplantation in the MELD era are more acutely ill, the impact of the policy changes on perioperative management has not been completely assessed. We retrospectively reviewed the records of 124 primary adult liver transplant patients. Patients were divided into low (Յ30) and high MELD (Ͼ30) score groups. Preope… Show more

“…XIA et al (51) estudaram retrospectivamente um grupo de 124 pacientes submetidos a transplante e concluíram que aqueles com escores MELD altos exigiram maior quantidade de hemoderivados e vasopressores. A média do escore MELD obtido pelos autores foi de 22 (no grupo que foi politransfundido) e de 13 (no grupo sem politransfusão).…”

“…The recipient's condition is an important variable because a larger graft volume may be necessary when the recipient's peritransplant liver function is severely impaired. [29][30][31][32] In the present study, recipients selected to receive small-for-size grafts had low median Model for End-Stage Liver Disease and Child-Turcotte-Pugh score (Table 1) to ensure good outcomes with small-for-size grafts.…”
