Prenylated Flavonoids from Epimedium koreanum Nakai and their Human Neutrophil Elastase Inhibitory Effects

Abstract: Human neutrophil elastase (HNE) has been linked to immune system functions, including inflammation, as well as the development of skin wrinkles, suggesting that HNE inhibitors have many practical applications. In this study, the methanol extract of Epimedium koreanum Nakai contained potent HNE inhibitory flavonoids (1-4) with IC 50 values of 6.06-125.80 μM. Prenyl groups within these flavonoids were critical for the inhibitory effects. For example, epimedokoreanin B (1) (IC 50 = 6.06 μM) showed 6-fold higher e… Show more

“…Compound 23 (tR = 19.10 min) was tentatively identified as Neophellamuretin based on the molecular ion ([M+H + ]) at m / z of 357.13 and two main fragments at m / z 325.10 [M+H-2OH] + and 253.09 [M+H-C5H10O2] + . Neophellamuretin was found in Epimedium koreanum Nakai [ 21 ] and Desmodium caudatum [ 22 ]. This is the first time that Neophellamuretin was found to be present in mulberry seeds or other mulberry matrices.…”

“…Most of the phenolics and flavonoids are able to inhibit elastase activity according to their concentration. 32,33 The major chemical constituents of apricot seeds previously measured are phenolics, flavonoids, carotenoids and amygdalin. From all these results, we can conclude the amygdalin has more powerful anti-ageing effect than ethanol apricot seeds extract.…”
