Prenatal Ultrasonographic Diagnosis of Fetal Gastroschisis

Abstract: Two cases of fetal gastroschisis were diagnosed in utero by ultrasound. In one patient, a cluster of sonolucent "cystic" structures was seen in the amniotic fluid which corresponded to fluid-filled bowel loops. The second infant was the firstborn of dichorionic twins and the gastroschisis abnormality appeared as two sonolucencies in relationship to the trunk. An extensive review of the literature is presented.

“…Sonographic characteristics of a variety of abnormalities of the genitourinary tract were reported (101,102), and researchers developed criteria to distinguish normal fluid in the renal collecting system from hydronephrosis. Gastrointestinal obstructive abnormalities and other anomalies were described (101)(102)(103)(104)(105), as were anomalies of the neck, such as cystic hygromas (106), and the thorax, including diaphragmatic hernias (107) and pulmonary masses. A sophisticated body of knowledge has developed around the sonographic evaluation of fetal cardiac structures and function, to the point that a special term fetal echocardiography is commonly used to describe US of the fetal heart (108).…”

“…Introduction -Abdominal Wall Defects trimester detailed ultrasound anomaly scan by visualising the loops of bowel that herniate through the anterior abdominal wall into the amniotic fluid (see Figure 1.3). The first reported case of prenatally diagnosed gastroschisis was by Giulian andAlvear in 1978 (Giulian andAlvear, 1978). The criteria for ultrasound diagnosis of abdominal wall defects are well reported (Redford et al 1985), (Nielsen et al 1985).…”

“…1973, GIRVAN et coll. 1974, GIULIAN & ALVEAR 1978. Gastroschisis is defined as a complete defect of the anterior abdomi nal wall, with evisceration of matted, thickened and cyanosed intestines including the small bowel, parts of the colon, and the stomach, occasionally also of the gallbladder, adnexa, and urinary bladder, but rarely of the liver.…”
