Prenatal nicotine exposure induces depression‑like behavior in adolescent female rats via modulating neurosteroid in the hippocampus

Abstract: Prenatal nicotine exposure (PNE) is closely related to depression in offspring. However, the underlying mechanism is still unclear. We hypothesized that neurosteroid in the hippocampus may mediate PNE-induced depression-like behaviors. Nicotine was subcutaneously administered (1.0 mg/kg) to pregnant rats twice daily from gestational day (GD) 9 to 20. In adolescent offspring, PNE significantly increased immobility time and decreased the sucrose preference in female rats. The numbers of hippocampal neurons decli… Show more

“…For example, harmful determinants can influence the uptake of risk behaviours. Risk behaviours, such as sedentary behaviour, substance abuse and smoking/nicotine exposure, have been linked to depression [ 226 , 335 , 355 , 385 , 386 , 387 , 388 , 389 , 390 , 391 , 392 , 393 , 394 , 395 , 396 , 397 , 398 , 399 , 400 , 401 ]. Harmful determinants can also have an impact on diet.…”

“…Self-focused attention is inseparable from mood and linked to creativity through depression. Persistent negative mood or loss of interest was the character of depression as mood or affective disorders ( Zhang et al, 2019 ). Our investigation on the relationships among depression, self-focused attention, and creativity would help us explain the relationships among negative mood, rumination, reflection, and creativity.…”

“…Decades of research on conventional cigarette smoke have reported the toxicological effects of smoking and nicotine on brain development. For example, studies utilizing various exposure paradigms to assess the developmental effects of prenatal and/or postnatal nicotine exposure in rodents reported increased hyperactivity (Lacy et al 2016;Newman et al 1999), impaired cognitive ability in terms of memory and attention, altered pre-pulse inhibition (Alkam et al 2013;Zhang et al 2018), and increased prevalence of anxiety-or depressive-like behaviors in adulthood (Lee et al 2016;Pinheiro et al 2015;Zhang et al 2019). Importantly, some of these behavioral alterations (e.g., increased activity) were reported in offspring of pregnant mice exposed to 2.4% nicotine through e-cigarette aerosol exposure (Smith et al 2015).…”
