Background and Aims: Information about the extent to which anemia is related to thalassemia and iron deficiency (ID) is not available in Vietnam. This study investigated the burden of anemia in relation to thalassemia and ID among Vietnamese pregnant women. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Thua Thien Hue, Central Vietnam. Blood samples taken from 399 pregnant women with a gestational age <12 weeks were analyzed. Anemia was defined as Hb levels <11 g/dl, and ID as ferritin values <15 ng/ml. Results: Out of 399 participants, 77 (19.3%) were anemic. While the prevalence of ID was 20.1%, the prevalence of ID anemia was 6.0%. The overall prevalence of thalassemia was 7.3%. Of the 77 anemic women, 24 (31.2%) had ID, and 20 (26.0%) had thalassemia genes. The rest (42.9%) were anemic due to unknown causes. Conclusions: The results indicate that ID remains a significant health burden among the study population, together with anemia caused by unknown factors. Thalassemias appear not to contribute to a great extent to anemia among Vietnamese pregnant women. Other causes need to be investigated further in order to develop an effective control program for anemia within the population.

Introduction: Severe Anaemia during pregnancy is an important contributor to maternal mortality, as well as to the low birth weight which is in turn an important risk factor for infant mortality. We aim to determine the prevalence of anaemia in the region amongst pregnant women and identify their problems and to easily provide them with the clinical services. Methods: A community based cross sectional study done in PHCRC Chapagaun, Lalitpur from July 17, 2011 to Sep.17, 2011. Date from pregnant women presenting at PHCRC, , were filled and analysed using standard guidelines from WHO and Indian council of Medical research..Results: Out of 192 pregnant women, the average age of pregnancy was 21-25 years (46.55), mean haemoglobin (Hb) in pregnancy was 11g/dl. Majority pregnant women are Newar (35.4%) ethnicity, 67.7% of them housewives and 31.5% have primary level education. Only 24% was found to have their haemoglobin level in anaemic range. Among the pregnant women (n) =192; 48 (25%) had worm infestation, 119 (62%) had negative stool report and 25 (13%) had other than worms were found. Only about one third of the sample has actually taken albendazole.Conclusions: Aanaemia is prevalent in pregnant women of PHCRC, chapagaun and there was a significant correlation between anaemia and worm infestation. However, the relation among the haemoglobin level, iron, folic acid and albendazole was not significant. Keywords: anaemia; infestation; pregnant women; worm. | PubMed

INTRODUCCIÓNEl embarazo es uno de los momentos de mayor vulnerabilidad nutricional en la vida de la mujer ya que las necesidades de energía y nutrientes se encuentran aumentadas en virtud del crecimiento fetal y de la síntesis de tejidos maternos como el aumento del tamaño uterino, la hipertrofia de las glándulas mamarias y la acumulación de las reservas grasas. El estado nutricional de la madre previo a la gestación y los hábitos alimentarios implementados durante el embarazo, son condicionantes de importancia en este periodo del ciclo vital (1-3).Mantener una alimentación saludable es un objetivo primordial del cuidado prenatal, momento en el cual la edu- cación alimentaria nutricional (EAN) resulta una herramienta imprescindible que permite reforzar los comportamientos alimentarios beneficiosos y modificar aquellos que impactan negativamente sobre la salud. Alcanzar dichas modificaciones requiere que la mujer tenga un papel activo, sea consciente de los riesgos de llevar a cabo una alimentación inadecuada y testigo de sus propios avances y logros (4).La ganancia de peso y la deficiencia de algunos micronutrientes críticos constituyen las principales problemáticas a ser abordadas en el control prenatal mediante la EAN.
