“…Consistent with these ethanol‐stress interactions, we recently reported greater anxiety‐like behavior in the light‐dark box paradigm (Di Doi, Fernández, Hager, & Pautassia, ), and greater isolation‐induced alcohol intake and preference, in PAE versus control adolescent rats (Fernández, Carrizo‐Largo, Plaza, Haeger, & Pautassi, ). Moreover, several clinical and pre‐clinical reports have indicated that individuals exposed to prenatal alcohol are more likely to develop drug abuse during adulthood (Baer, Sampson, Barr, Connor, & Streissguth, ; Contreras et al, ; Fabio et al, ; Malanga & Kosofsky, ; Miranda‐Morales, Nizhnikov, & Spear, ; Pautassi, Nizhnikov, Spear, & Molina, ).…”

“…We followed the procedures of Contreras et al () and Fernández, Carrizo, Plaza, Haeger, and Pautassi (). Sprague‐Dawley female rats were exposed to water or alcohol (10% v/v, sweetened with 64 mg/L sucralose) throughout pregnancy and during the first 7 days of nursing (P7).…”

“…It is worth noting that in Fernández et al 14 we employed a similar PAE protocol, yet did not observe reduced overall liquid intake in the EtOH offspring. There are, however, some differences between the studies.…”

“…We recently found, in Sprague-Dawley rats, that isolation housing during adolescence unmasked the facilitative effect of PAE on alcohol intake at adulthood. 14 Based on this, we expected isolated housing to interact with PAE to promote alcohol drinking at adolescence, an effect likely to be associated with enhanced anxiety responses.…”

“…Prolonged isolation housing during early development has also been shown to induce augmented alcohol intake in rodents (Lopez et al, 2011;Kutcher et al, 2016). Additionally, in one study it was found that this heightened alcohol intake was facilitated in adolescent males exposed to alcohol during gestation and the first week of lactation (Fernández et al, 2019). In that case, males pre-and postnatally exposed to alcohol showed significantly higher alcohol intake and increased alcohol preference in comparison with non-exposed controls during the first 5-6 testing sessions, but only if they had been housed in isolation conditions from weaning.…”
