Prenatal diagnosis of amniotic band syndrome

Abstract: Amniotic band can cause a broad spectrum of anomalies ranging from simple band constrictions to major craniofacial and visceral defects. It can cause significant neonatal morbidity. Accurate diagnosis will help in the management of the present pregnancy and in counseling with regard to future pregnancies. Here we report three cases of amniotic band syndrome detected in the prenatal period.

“…The craniofacial anomalies generally occur in an asymmetrical way. 4,5 In our case, broad cleft lip and palate, oligodactyly, right upper limb contracture was found, concordant with ABS. The ophthalmic defects that can occur in ABS depend on the localization of the band and the timing of its formation.…”

“…The most common structural defects are clubfoot, syndactyly, oligodactyly, craniofacial deformities including cleft lip and/or palate, asymmetric anencephaly, encephalocele, abnormal skull calcification. The craniofacial anomalies generally occur in an asymmetrical way . In our case, broad cleft lip and palate, oligodactyly, right upper limb contracture was found, concordant with ABS.…”

“…It is crucial for the management of current pregnancy and to reassure the patient regarding subsequent pregnancies about the sporadic nature of the condition with low recurrence. 3,9,20,49 Undoubtedly, the prenatal diagnosis can reduce the severity of many associated anomalies, allowing a timely therapeutic strategy during pregnancy with fetoscopic band release or intervention immediately after birth. 6 A fetus with amniotic band syndrome should be delivered in a tertiary care center where neonatologists, pediatric surgeons, and orthopedicians are available.…”

“…20 Structural abnormalities in ABS resemble genetic syndrome. 49 Early prenatal diagnosis of ABS is important to provide accurate information to the parents, predict the prognosis and in some cases perform in-utero lysis of the bands to restore blood flow to the affected limb. 33 A thorough evaluation of the umbilical cord and/or amniotic bands along with the fetal parts during early pregnancy is advocated.…”

“…Если появляется подозрение, что имеются амниотические тяжи, то необходимы дальнейшие более сложные обследования (3D УЗИ, МРТ, эхокардиограмма эмбриона) для определения серьёзности ситуации. Окончательный диагноз ставится после осмотра последа, в котором обнаруживают беспорядочные амниотические нити или обрывки амниона, свёрнутые у места прикрепления пуповины [11].…”
