Prenatal and Infancy Nurse Home Visiting Effects on Mothers: 18-Year Follow-up of a Randomized Trial

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Prenatal and infancy home-visiting by nurses is promoted as a means of improving maternal life-course, but evidence of long-term effects is limited. We hypothesized that nursevisitation would lead to long-term reductions in public-benefit costs, maternal substance abuse and depression, and that cost-savings would be greater for mothers with initially higher psychological resources. METHODS:We conducted an 18-year follow-up of 618 out of 742 low-income, primarily African-American mothers with no pre… Show more

“…In NFP, superior executive functioning and behavioral adaptation during testing was observed in a follow-up conducted two years after the program ended (at age 4) (Olds et al, 2004). Finally, from a public health perspective, it will be important to document in future long-term outcome studies whether or not the mothers who participated in Primeiros Laços went on to give birth to fewer children and if there was greater spacing between first and second pregnancies for those mothers who did have additional children 106 , 107 .…”

“…The NFP program is an evidence‐based public health nursing program designed to improve the health and well‐being of first‐time mothers and their children experiencing economic adversity. The home visiting program is based on over 40 years of evidence from three separate randomized clinical trials, with the first trial beginning in the 1970s in Elmira, New York (Eckenrode et al., 2010; Olds et al., 2014, 2019). Since program replication began in the United States (US) in 1996, the program has served over 340,000 families in 692 counties among 40 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands.…”
