“…We gave midazolam to decrease discomfort and anxiety of patients during spinal anaesthesia and found its usage was higher in the placebo group. This could be due to the sedative property of mirtazapine [11] as both groups had similar levels of sedation. “…As it blocks receptors associated with nausea and vomiting, mirtazapine had been shown to treat severe vomiting during pregnancy [8] and to treat cancer patients with pain, nausea and a variety of distressing symptoms [9,10]. Its anti-emetic effect has also been reported after laparoscopy surgery [11] and gastric bypass [12]. Its effect on the prevention of intrathecal morphine-induced PONV has not yet undergone evaluation.…”

“…In a controlled trial of patients receiving spinal anesthesia for orthopedic surgery, nausea and vomiting were reduced with mirtazapine versus placebo (47). Likewise among 80 women undergoing gynecologic surgery, addition of mirtazapine to dexamethasone prophylaxis decreased PONV rates (48). Other settings in which the drug has demonstrated efficacy include hyperemesis gravidarum and vomiting after gastric bypass surgery (49, 50, 51).…”
