Premalignant lesions of the oral cavity: current perspectives

Abstract: Premalignant lesions of the oral cavity are also called as potentially malignant disorders. The common premalignant lesions of the oral cavity include leukoplakia, oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) and oral erythroplakia. These lesions have a very high malignant transformation rate. The exact etiological factors for development of the premalignant lesions of the oral cavity are not fully understood till date. Use of tobacco, alcohol drinking, chewing betel quid containing areca nut and solar rays are important et… Show more

“…Injury to the sublingual salivary gland duct leads to mucus extravasation into the submucosa via hydrostatic pressure and the development of pseudocyst from mucus escape reaction. 17 Direct trauma can damage the acini with consequent ductal blockage, and backpressure secretion builds up with subsequent acini rupture. Subsequently, there is raised hydrostatic pressure, extravasation of mucus, and then the formation of the pseudocyst.…”

“…28 Imaging is advised mainly to know the extension of swelling before surgery or when the diagnosis is unclear. 29 Ultrasound is recommended for ranula as a preferred diagnostic tool. Ultrasound provides additional information about the relationship between the pseudocyst on the floor of the oral cavity and the sublingual gland and mylohyoid muscle.…”

“…All oral mucosa lesions with the risk of malignant changes are included under the term OPMD. 1 Its exact etiology is unknown, but there is strong evidence confirming the role of lymphocytes in the pathogenesis of this disorder. 2 Immune system deficiency plays a primary role in the development of this disease, and it is currently considered a disorder mediated by autoimmune cells.…”

“…The common term (OPMD) of potentially malignant oral disorders is suggested for oral premalignancy, including premalignant lesions (oral leukoplakia, erythroplakia, and proliferative verrucous leukoplakia) and premalignant conditions (lichen planus and submucosal fibrosis). All oral mucosa lesions with the risk of malignant changes are included under the term OPMD 1 . Its exact etiology is unknown, but there is strong evidence confirming the role of lymphocytes in the pathogenesis of this disorder 2 .…”
