Preloading Hydrous Ferric Oxide into Granular Activated Carbon for Arsenic Removal

Abstract: Arsenic is of concern in water treatment because of its health effects. This research focused on incorporating hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) into granular activated carbon (GAC) for the purpose of arsenic removal. Iron was incorporated into GAC via incipient wetness impregnation and cured at temperatures ranging from 60 to 90 degrees C. X-ray diffractions and arsenic sorption as a function of pH were conducted to investigate the effect of temperature on final iron oxide (hydroxide) and their arsenic removal capab… Show more

“…Zirconium dioxide nano particles were prepared by glycothermal method as follow [20]: 15.3 g of ZrOCl 2 ·8H 2 O was dissolved in one liter of water then slowly NaOH (0.05 Molar) was added with rapid stirring, till the pH of solutions became 9. The precipitated ZrO 2 was decanted and washed by using ethanol for five times.…”

“…2 that, compared to the X-ray powder diffraction pattern of AC, a newly emerged broad diffraction peak at 35.9°and a relatively smaller peak at 61.4° in Fe@AC demonstrated that the Fe element was present in AC in the form of 2-line ferrihydrite (JCPDS,. The other main crystallized peaks corresponded to the SiO2 contained in this AC (Jang et al 2008).…”

“…As expected, many attempts have previously been made to dope HFO and HZrO nanoparticles onto different kinds of substrates, namely, activated carbon, alginate, chitosan, zeolite and cation exchange resins [12][13][14][15][16]. However, these support materials only improved mechanical strength and hydraulic permeability for applications in fixed-bed columns.…”
