Preliminary survey of the pinewood nematode in Turkey

Abstract: A survey was conducted in the northern conifer forests of Turkey in 2003 and 2004 for the pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. Wood samples were collected from declining pine trees, located in the following target areas: Düzce, Ankara, Bolu, and Artvin. Nematodes were extracted from over 310 samples and were observed and identified. B. xylophilus was not detected in any samples. Bursaphelenchus species were only found in 6% of the samples. From the B. xylophilus‐group, only the species B. mucronatus … Show more

“…The efficiency of the sampling technique used directly affects the result of survey. While the Baermann funnel technique has traditionally been used to extract nematodes for identification, the extraction process is neither rapid (48 h) (Yang et al, 2003;Akbulut et al, 2006), nor selective, in that all species of nematodes present in the wood are recovered. Considerable time and taxonomic expertise is required to separate the Bursaphelenchus spp.…”

“…Several Bursaphelenchus species have been found in Turkey (Giblin-Davis et al, 2005;Vieira et al, 2003Akbulut et al, 2006) to date. They were extracted from a bee and from wood of P. nigra Arnold, P. sylvestris L. and P. pinaster Aiton.…”

“…Before this survey, the presence and distribution of Bursaphelenchus species in Turkey were not known. Some results of this survey were presented in international meetings where the genus was reported for the first time associated with conifer woods (Vieira et al, 2003Akbulut et al, 2006). Bursaphelenchus anatolius Giblin-Davis, Hazir, Center, Ye, Keskin, Thorp & Thomas, 2005 was described from Ankara as an associate of bees in the genus Halictus.…”

“…A survey monitoring for the presence of B. xylophilus was started in 2003. So far, several Bursaphelenchus species, but not B. xylophilus, have been found (Akbulut et al, 2006(Akbulut et al, , 2007(Akbulut et al, , 2008a. In 2012, a new project was started to determine the insect vectors of Bursaphelenchus species.…”
