Preliminary study on the effects of heavy metals on the growth and some antioxidant enzymes in Arthrospira platensis‐M2 strain

Abstract: SUMMARYIn this study, we have analyzed superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR) activities, biomass accumulation and chlorophyll-a content in the Arthrospira platensis-M2 strain grown at different concentrations of zinc (Zn), tin (Sn) and mercury (Hg). We found that there is a close relationship between chlorophyll-a content and biomass accumulation in A. platensis-M2 strain as a result of Zn, Sn and Hg exposures. Sn was found to be the most toxic heavy metal among … Show more

“…By adjusting antioxidant enzymes, many attempts have been undertaken to increase the salt tolerance of plants (Hu et al 2012 ; Jebara et al 2005 ; Mallik et al 2011 ; Mao et al 2020 ). The induction of the antioxidant enzyme activities of Cyanophyta and Chlorophyta under several environmental conditions has been reported in the literature (Ajitha et al 2019 ; Ismaiel and Said 2018 ; Önem et al 2018 ; Ugya et al 2020 ).…”

“…The samples were centrifugated at 14.000 rpm and 4 °C for 20 min. After treatment, SOD activity was measured as described in Önem et al [ 34 ]. The standard graphic was prepared, and it was used to calculate the quantity of SOD activity as unit mg −1 protein.…”

“…The estimation of the ascorbate oxidation decreasing rate at 290 nm was utilized as principle. Önem et al [ 34 ] were perfomed for extraction and determination of the enzyme activity. The initial rate of the reaction using the extinction coefficient of ascorbate (E = 2.8 mM cm −1 at 290 nm) was utilized to calculate enzyme activity.…”

“…Among the founts of natural compounds, microalgae biomass represents a good source of antioxidants, as microalgae are capable of high production of these metabolites (phenolic compounds, carotenoids, polyunsaturated fatty acids) under stress conditions, making increasingly important to focus attention on studying the physiology of these microorganisms [1][2][3]. Most importantly, microalgae, respect to higher plants, which can be also rich in antioxidant compounds, have a higher growth rate and can be cultivated in photo-bioreactors, in extreme environments, without competing with arable lands.…”
