Thermal comfort is important for buildings, especially in tropical climates. The issue of increasing indoor temperature is influenced by various factors that cause occupants to face thermal discomfort in cafeterias that uses both mechanical and natural ventilation systems. This study aims to determine the perception of occupants and evaluate parameter variations of thermal comfort in the cafeteria of Pagoh Campus Residential College, UTHM Pagoh Branch Campus. This study was conducted through the measurements of subjective and physical parameters. Data collection is carried out in two days, which are weekdays and weekends. This study uses some parameters variation which are thermal sensation vote index (TSV), predicted mean vote index (PMV), predicted percentage of dissatisfaction (PPD), operative temperature (To) and neutral operative temperature (Tneutop) to determine the thermal comfort conditions in the cafeteria. The results shows that the average values of air temperature, mean radiation temperature, relative humidity and air velocity from environmental measurements were 30.2 °C, 30.6 °C, 66% and 0.1 m/s respectively. In addition, PMV and PPD values were 2.0 and 76% from environmental measurements, while 1.36 and 43% from questionnaires. For To and Tneutop, the average values obtained are 30.4 °C and 28.6 °C. Furthermore, the findings showed that only the morning session was in the acceptable operative temperature range and complied with ASHRAE Standard 55 for both the 80% and 90% acceptability limits. At the end of the study, it was found that the values from the thermal environment measurements and surveys exceeded those recommended by ASHRAE Standard 55. This concluded that the quality of the occupants’ environment in the cafeteria is outside the satisfactory thermal comfort level. Therefore, the improvement through mechanical ventilation may very helpful in improving a good ventilation system as well as encouraging an increase in thermal comfort in the building.

In the present research work, the thermal comfort of an educational building in a semi-arid climate of Lahore, Pakistan has been analyzed based on the PMV-PPD method using a subjective scale in terms of acceptability, neutrality, and preference, considering the impact of gender. Firstly, this study examine how the temperature affects occupants\' (male and female) comfort levels in current university classrooms during the winter and summer. Secondly, how occupant behavior affects thermal comfort, productivity, and health well-being to determine how future buildings should be designed to accommodate gender preferences. Thirdly, the study improve retrofitting approaches for building systems that make it satisfies inhabitants\' thermal requirements, and is cost and energy effective. This study revealed that females were more affected by winter conditions while males were more affected by higher temperatures in summers. In both seasons, males found a frequent impact of thermal comfort, due to which more productivity loss was observed in them in comparison to females. In winter, females were more affected form SBS, and in summer, males showed more symptoms of getting affected by SBS. The overall percentage saving in energy consumption was found 27 % for considered Building compared with retrofitted simulated model of building systems. It is suggested that a well-insulated indoor thermal environment is the need of the hour for classrooms in university buildings to improve the thermal comfort conditions, productivity and health conditions of the occupants for both seasons.

Thermal comfort in educational buildings affects not only the well-being of students but also their academic performance. Over time, various methods have been developed to assess it. However, none of them takes into account the adaptation of students of different ages, which is an important issue. In recent years, the study of thermal comfort has become very important due to energy-saving measures and ventilation protocols to combat the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Therefore, it is necessary to gather all the information to guide future research. Thus, this paper presents a comprehensive review of field studies on thermal comfort in classrooms at different educational levels. The focus is on those conducted during the global pandemic of COVID-19. It has been observed that students from climates with a higher degree of variation have shown a better adaptation. Children also tended to feel less affected by changing temperatures. High school and university students showed a greater range of dissatisfaction with heat than with cold. The adaptive approach is more suitable for recognising the comfort needs of all age groups. However, by using this approach together with the Fanger method, more reliable results have been reported. In most of the studies, comfort levels were found to be lower than those indicated by the standards, highlighting the need for guidelines adapted to the thermal comfort conditions of all students. Finally, the various natural ventilation measures to avoid COVID-19 infection have led to a decrease in comfort levels, especially in winter.
