The new strategy of the fuel-slurry integrated gasifier/gas turbine (FSIG/GT) concept for thermoelectric power generation is applied to the case of sugar cane bagasse (SCB). The FSIG/GT process allows fuel feeding to a power unit based on gasification using commercially available slurry pumps, thus avoiding the usual sequential lock-hoppers, also known as cascade feeding systems. It also dispenses with the need of pure oxygensometimes combined with hydrocarbonsto promote ignition of particles in the injected slurry. The fuel slurry is prepared to high dry-solid content and pumped into a dryer, from which the solid particles are fed into the gasifier. Because both units operate under similar pressures, simple rotary valves and Archimedes' screws might carry the secondary feeding. The gas is cleaned to bring the particle content and size as well alkaline concentration within the acceptable limits for injections into standard gas turbines. The work shows that no steam is needed as gasification agent, thus simplifying the process and decreasing the capital costs. Moreover, the strategy leads to higher efficiency when compared with power generation based on high-pressure steam turbines, BIG/GT process consuming SCB, and combined cycles using pressurized-chamber boilers.

Previous works have shown that glycerol, which is a residue from biodiesel production, can be applied to greatly increase the efficiency of power generation processes consuming biomass, such as sugar cane bagasse (SCB). The proposed process departs from a biomass and glycerol slurry, which is pumped into a pressurized gasifier. The produced gas is cleaned to reach particle content and sizes as well alkaline concentration allowed to be injected into commercially available axial gas turbines. The removal of alkaline is achieved through cooling the gas to temperatures below the dew-point of those chemical species. Energy recovered from that cooling and from the gas turbine exit drives two steam cycles. The present theoretical investigation assesses the effects of glycerol concentration in the slurry with wet biomass fed to the process on its overall efficiency. In addition, the gasifier operational pressure is increased to the limit allowed for air compression by axial compressors without intercooling. This work shows that efficiencies can reach levels nearing 46% and discusses the effect of glycerol fraction in the biomass slurry on the overall power-generation process. The present work is a technical feasibility study. Economic analysis or considerations are beyond its scope and have been left for future investigations.

Este trabajo presenta los resultados del proyecto de investigación relacionado con la integración energética llevado a cabo en la fábrica de azúcar del Ingenio Risaralda S.A. Se muestra el desarrollo para cada una de las etapas de mejoramiento ejecutadas para reducir el vapor demandado para la elaboración de azúcar. Para alcanzar el objetivo propuesto fueron intervenidas las operaciones unitarias de calentamiento de jugo crudo, evaporación de jugo clarificado, cristalización de sacarosa y secado de azúcar húmeda. Los resultados del proyecto generaron una reducción del 19.2% en el consumo específico de vapor, pasando de 1,450 a 1,172 lbmvapor/TCM [657.6 a 531.5 kgvapor/TCM]. Igualmente, como producto de la implementación del proyecto de integración energética entre los años 2017 y 2020, se muestran los beneficios relacionados con el incremento de la venta de energía eléctrica en 3.3 GWh entregados a la red nacional.
