Preliminary seismostratigraphic interpretations from the Gulf of St. Lawrence

Marine geophysical surveys in Port au Port Bay, west Newfoundland, have revealed more than 50 m of Quaternary fill in East Bay and lesser amounts in other basins. Six seismostratigraphic units have been identified and interpreted as follows: (1) an acoustically unstratified unit, including till and other ice-contact deposits, representing the products of deposition or loading by grounded glacial ice or of other ice-contact processes; (2) a crudely stratified unit, believed to be mainly ice-contact or ice-proximal sand and gravel; (3) a conformably stratified unit, interpreted as glacimarine and early paraglacial sandy silt and clay; (4) a weakly-stratified to acoustically transparent unit consisting of postglacial mud; (S) a wedge-shaped unit dominated by clinoform reflections, representing postglacial deltaic sand and gravel in submerged terraces off Fox Island River; and (6) thin wedges of acoustically stratified deposits, considered to represent transgressive shoreface, late-delta, and tidal units of sand and gravel. Radiocarbon determinations on paired bivalves from unit 3 indicate a range of ages from 13.3 to10.8ka, implying initally rapid late- and post- glacial sedimentation. Paraglacial sediment supply from small glaciated river basins is known to be maximized during and shortly after deglaciation and to decrease rapidly thereafter. This is consistent with an interpretation involving rapid early development of the subaerial fan and submerged delta terraces of Fox Island River. Sediment derived from the river and from coastal erosion along the front of the fan has been transported southward under net longshore drift to sinks in the vicinity of Two Guts Pond. The submerged delta ten-aces and erosional shore platforms in Port au Port Bay and St. George's Bay indicate that the postglacial sea-level minimum in this area was approximately 25 m below present. These features are undated but their age is estimated to be about 9.5 ± 1 ka. RÉSUMÉ Des levés géophysiques marins dans la baie de Port au Port, dans l'ouest de Terre-Neuve, ont montré la présence de plus de 50 m de dép ôts quaternaires dans la baie East et des quantités moindres dans les autres bassins. Six unités sismostratigraphiques ont été identifiers et interpréters com me suit: (1) une unité acoustiquement non stratififie, incluant du till et d'autres dépôts de contact de glace, qui représentent les produits du dépôt ou du chargement par de la glaceéchouée ou par d'autres processus de contact de glace; (2) une unité grossièrement stratifice, considérée comme étant principalement des sables et des graviers de contact de glace ou à proximité de la glace; (3) une unité conformdment stratified, interprétée comme de l'argile et du silt sablonneux glacio-marins et paraglaciaires précoces; (4) une unite faiblement stratified a acoustiquement transparente consistant en boue postglaciaire; (5) une unité en biseau dominée par des reflections inclines, représentant du sable et du gravier de delta postglaciaires dans des terrasses submergées au large de la rivière de Fox Island; et (6) des biseaux minées de depots acoustiquement stratifies, considers comme représentant des unit és de sable et gravier transgressifs d'avant-plage, de delta tardives et tidales. Des datations au carbone sur des bivalves entiers de l'unité 3 indiquent un intervalle d'âge allant de 13.3 à 10.8 ka, impliquant une sédimentation tardi- et post-glaciaire initialement rapide. L'afflux de sédiments paraglaciaires provenant de petits bassins de rivières affectés par les glaciers est reconnuêtre maximal pendant et peu apr ès la d églaciation et décroitre rapidement par la suite. Ceci est en accord avec une interprétation impliquant un développement précoce rapide du cone subadrien et des terrasses de delta submergees de la rivière de Fox Island. Les sédiments dérives de la rivière et de l'érosion côitère le long de la partie frontale du cône ont été transport és vers le sud sous l'effet de courants c ôtiers à des trappes dans les alentours de l'étang de Two Guts. Les terrasses de delta submergées et les plates-formes côti èresérosionnelles dans la baie de Port au Port et la Baie St.-George indiquent que le niveau postglaciaire minimal de la mer dans cette région était approximativement 25 m sous le niveau actuel. Carbonate blocks brought up from the seafl oor during drag fi shing in a small restricted area offshore northern Cape Breton Island are irregularly shaped and range in size from 6 cm 3 to >1 m 3 . They have smooth to "clinkery", dendritic, or "popcorn-surface" structures, can be layered to massive, and are porous. Many are highly porous and/or eroded. They contain fi ne-grained siliciclastic material (mud to granule sized) with minor amounts of bioclasts cemented by calcite. Three blocks have vent structures and some have pores lined by fi ne-grained sparite. Seismic lines in the vicinity of the discovery area show acoustic turbidity, bright spots interpreted to be hydrocarbon seeps, diaper-like structures, and columnar sediment disturbances that reach to bedrock. Outside the immediate area, pock marks occur on the sediment surface. Carbon isotope values from shelly material cemented in the blocks range from δ 13 13 C = -9.41 to -35.27 ‰ PDB (Pee Dee Belemnite) with an algae encrustation or bacterial mat yielding -61.38 ‰ PDB. From the isotopic analysis and the seismic interpretation we are confi dent that these blocks are pieces of carbonate mounds and vents formed by methanogenesis of hydrocarbon from slow seeps on the seafl oor, the hydrocarbon originating either within the recent sediment and/or from bedrock, most likely the latter. The ecology of these mounds has not been studied and needs further work in this area of active commercial fi shing. Multibeam bathymetric imagery of Bay of Islands, Newfoundland, is interpreted within the context of late-glacial and post-glacial processes. West of Humber Arm, the fiord floor is irregular and deep. Humber Arm has steep sidewalls and a flat floor. It contains glaciomarine mud, capped by a layer of red mud probably derived from the Deer Lake Basin, which was connected to the ocean ca. 12.2 ka. In the early postglacial period, sediments on the fiord sidewalls slid into deep water, forming erosional channels. Depositional lobes, stacked in many areas, overlie glaciomarine sediments in deep water. The glaciomarine and submarine slide sediments are overlain by postglacial mud that is imprinted by elongate, ovoid, and circular fluid-escape trenches, and sedimentary furrows. The natural morphology of the fiord has been modified by anthropogenic activity at Comer Brook. Effects include an apron of bark offshore from the paper mill, dredge spoil, and a sunken vessel at the mouth of Humber River. Large submarine slides, probably triggered by wharf construction at Seal Head, formed deep channels on the fiord sidewalls and overlapping depositional lobes on the fiord floor. They are morphologically similar to the lateglacial slide failures in the fiord.Les images bathymetriques multifaisceaux de Bay of Islands, Terre-Neuve, sont in terp rets dans le contexte des processus tardiglaciaires et post-glaciaires. L'activite anthropique a modifie la morphologie naturelle du fjord & Comer Brook. Les effets de cette activite comprennent un tablier d'ecorce au large de la papeterie, des materiaux de dragage et un navire ayant could a Pembouchure de la riviere Humber. D'importants eboulements sous-marins, probablement causes par la construction du quai de Seal Head, ont formd des chenaux profonds dans les parois du fjord et des lobes sedimentaires qui se superposent sur le fond du fjord.
