Preliminary results of electric field measurements in the auroral zone

Abstract: In April 1967 five Nike‐Apache rockets were launched from Kiruna, Sweden, carrying barium release and electron concentration experiments. The component of the electric field transverse to the magnetic lines of force is derived from the motion of the ion clouds. The electron concentration measurements provide ionospheric conductivities. The magnitudes of the electric fields varied between 2 and 20 v/km. Their directions were northwestward for evening conditions and southwestward for morning conditions. The magn… Show more

“…Thus, the subsequent motion of the barium ions may be measured by ground-based optical techniques, and the perpendicular ionospheric electric field deduced from its influence on the trajectory of the cloud. In this way more than 100 barium cloud measurements of electric fields in the ionosphere have been made [28,29,30,31,32,33,34]. The motion of the ion cloud perpendicular to/~ is related to the perpendicular ionospheric electric field in a complex fashion.…”

“…A further study of the polar cap electric field was carried out by Heppner (1972c) using data of the OGO-6 satellite and by Caufman, Gurnett andFrank with Injun-5 data (Caufman andGurnett, 1971, 1972;Frank and Gurnett, 1971 ;Gurnett, 1972).…”

“…The .electric field in the auroral ionosphere has been measured using several techniques -ExB drift of Barium ion clouds; balloon, rocket and satellite-borne double-probes and ground-based incoherent scatter radars (e.g. Foppl et al, 1968;Mozer and Bruston, 1967;Cauffman and Gurnett, 1972;and Doupnik et al, 1972). These measurements have indicated generally northward electric fields in the afternoon and evening sectors and generally southward electric fields in the morning sector of the auroral zone.…”
