Preliminary results of dry Deep Soil Mixing soil-cement composite testing

Abstract: This paper provides results of testing made for soil-cement mixtures in dry mixing technology. This technology is greatly dependent on existing soil condition; hence the results are of highly random nature. Material used in testing was distinguished with high organic content and low humidity. Tests were carried out in laboratory of Wroclaw University of Technology on 145 samples as ordered by Menard Polska Ltd. Company. Samples were prepared and stored under laboratory conditions and then, after various matura… Show more

“…The method of analyzing data obtained from the tests was based on the method presented by Kanty [12] and data presented in the studies [13][14][15][16] were analyzed in a similar manner. The methodology of analysis is analogical to the concrete tests, while the difference consists of the fact that in the graphs of deformation stresses, the first part of the graph is not taken into account, because it is unreliable due to the press adaption to the uneven surface of the sample.…”

“…The soil, which mostly consisted of peat with admixtures of clays, was delivered from the construction site, where the mass stabilisation was supposed to be implemented. These tests have also been presented in the works [13,14], where the focus was on determining the optimal time for quality control of the material, as well as demonstrating the changes in strength parameters depending on the time and amount of used cement. Another work focusing on the aspect of dependence of the strength increase along with the increase in the amount of cement in the material is [15].…”

“…All components are to be mechanically mixed to ensure a clear and uniform structure of final soil-cement material. According to former experience [6,7], the mixing process should take roughly from five up to ten minutes.…”

“…Various technologies of Deep Soil Mixing are implemented mainly in the foundation of bridges and other engineering structures [1][2][3]. Dry soil mixing can be used in soft soils of high moisture [4][5][6][7]. The typical DSM equipment consists of a binder injectors and a drilling machine, which are adopted to work in adverse soil conditions.…”

“…The examples of such technological design procedures were provided in the works conducted within the research program at the Wrocł aw University of Science and Technology. The tests were conducted for two various technologies: wet mixing with the use of cement binder [3] and ashes [4], as well as dry mixing [5,6]. The results obtained in the cited works cannot be directly compared due to the fact that different soil and binder were used.…”
