Preliminary Results of Anthropogenic Seismicity Monitoring in the Region of Song Tranh 2 Reservoir, Central Vietnam

Abstract: A b s t r a c t Song Tranh 2 hydropower plant and the reservoir containing backed up water are located in the Quang Nam province (Central Vietnam). The region experiences unusual seismic activity related to the reservoir impoundment, with earthquakes of magnitude up to 4.7. In result of cooperation between the Institute of Geophysics, Vietnam Academy of Sciences and Technology and the Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences a seismic network has been built to facilitate seismic monitoring of the So… Show more

“…It is also shown in the above cited paper (Eaton and Maghsoudi, 2015) that the earthquakes were generated in two different tectonic systems, which is supported by the seismotectonic interpretation of Song Tranh 2 seismicity provided by Wiszniowski, et al (2015). In addition, the earthquake productivity within the second cluster became more significant in the later part of the period of observation.…”

“…Two the strongest earthquakes of magnitudes 4.6 and 4.7 took place on 22nd October and on 15th November 2012, respectively and caused minor damage to housing in the area. Since 2012 the area has been monitored by a local network of short period seismometers [Wiszniowski et al, 2015]. The completeness threshold is 1.0.…”

“…(Lasocki et al 2017;Leptokaropoulos et al 2017a). IS-EPOS has been already used to facilitate scientific research in recently published papers connected with anthropogenic as well as natural seismicity by utilizing data, applications and/or the interface and facilities of the platform (Wiszniowski et al 2015;Kozłowska et al 2016;Lizurek 2017;Rudziński and Dineva 2017;Gkarlaouni et al 2017;Lizurek et al 2017;Olszewska et al 2017;Staszek et al 2017;Leptokaropoulos et al 2017bLeptokaropoulos et al , 2018aLeptokaropoulos and Staszek 2018;Orlecka-Sikora et al 2018). “…The second model corresponds for instance to the seismicity triggered by a surface reservoir impoundment of the hydropower plant Song Tranh 2 in Central Vietnam (e.g. Wiszniowski et al 2015;Urban et al 2015). The third model is a mixture of two one-side truncated exponential distributions, and reads:…”

“…The two considered approaches to CI estimation of hazard functions have been applied to two actual sets of earthquakes related to anthropogenic seismicity accompanying, respectively, (1) underground exploitation of copper ore in the Legnica-Głogów Copper District (LGCD) in Poland (Orlecka-Sikora et al 2012) and (2) Song Tranh 2 in Vietnam reservoir impoundment (Wiszniowski et al 2015;Urban et al 2015). The first dataset from LGCD is associated with mining exploitation in section G-11/8 of Rudna mine.…”
