Preliminary Observation of Parity Nonconservation in Atomic Thallium

Abstract: Parity nonconservation is observed in the 6 2 P t /2~7 2 Pt/2 transition in thallium. Absorption of circularly polarized 293-nm photons by 6 jp t^ atoms in an E field results in polarization of the 7 2 P\/2 state through interference of Stark El amplitudes with Ml and paritynonconserving El amplitudes 3fR and S p . Detection of this polarization yields the circular dichroism 6^ + (5.2±2.4)xl0" 3 , which agrees in sign and magnitude with theoretical estimates based on the Weinberg-Salam model. We report prelimin… Show more

“…This potential can mix atomic states of opposite parity, such as a valence electron in S 1/2 and P 1/2 atomic orbitals. This mixing can either be measured by searching for parity violating optical rotation in atomic emission/absorption [114,117], or by looking for interference between the APV induced state mixing and the mixing provided by an external electric field (the Stark-interference method [119]). APV has been measured in a number of atoms [29,116], and comparison to theory gives tests of the standard model at low energies.…”

“…The purpose of the electric field is to provide a reference transition amplitude due to Stark-mixing of the same states, interfering with the PV amplitude. In such interference method [11,12], one is measuring the part of the transition probability that is linear in both the reference Stark-induced amplitude and the PV amplitude. In addition to enhancing the PV-dependent signal, employing the Stark-PV interference technique provides for all-important reversals allowing one to separate the PV effects from various sys-tematics.…”

“…Extension to hydrogen-like and heliumlike atoms may result in a test of QED calculations, and is presently under active investigation [5]. Second-ly, the M 1 E 1 nd interference occurs in parity violation experiments, like those being performed at present on cesium [6] and thallium [7] in zero magnetic field and also those under investigation on the same elements with the use of a high magnetic field [8,9].…”
