Preliminary investigations for the development of a virtual reality-based English-language communication program: Using the Delphi method

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to gather opinions from experts via the Delphi method to inform the future development of a virtual reality based English language communication program for university level students in Korea. The participants, who consisted of a panel of experts and professors who majored in English language and multimedia education, completed three Delphi surveys based on Context, Input, Process, and Product evaluation, which is referred to as CIPP. In the first Delphi survey, the participants a… Show more

“…Yeh, Tseng and Heng (2022); Huang et al (2021) stress the interactivity of VR technology, enabling learners to develop greater language awareness and improved language skills. The use of VR applications facilitates real-time simulated activities, providing stress-free, secure opportunities for learners to employ language skills (Bryant et al 2019;Kim et al 2022;Yunus et al, 2013). Li et al's (2022 exploration of VR's impact on vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension supports the notion that VR enhances language achievement.…”

“…Virtual reality has also been shown to enhance learners' listening comprehension [40]. Kim et al [41] examined the impact of virtual reality on Korean language learners' listening comprehension and reported positive results, with VR-based instruction leading to better listening performance and increased learner motivation. Hua and Wang's [42] review of virtual reality-assisted language learning research from 2018 to 2022 also revealed that virtual reality technologies have been applied to improve listening skills.…”

“…These environments often foster a sense of community among learners, encouraging mutual support, feedback, and collaboration. By immersing themselves in an English-speaking environment, learners can build confidence, fluency, and proficiency in the language, ultimately enabling them to communicate effectively in diverse realworld situations [6].The design and evaluation of an English-speaking practice environment based on virtual reality (VR) technology involve several key considerations to ensure effectiveness and user satisfaction [7].Firstly, the VR environment should be immersive and engaging, with realistic simulations of English-speaking scenarios such as everyday conversations, job interviews, or social interactions. This requires high-quality graphics, sound effects, and interactive elements to create a sense of presence and authenticity for users [8].Additionally, the environment should offer a variety of learning activities and exercises to accommodate different learning styles and proficiency levels.…”
