Preliminary Investigation of the Clinical Significance of Detecting Circulating Tumor Cells Enriched from Lung Cancer Patients

Abstract: Results of the present study suggest potential clinical utilities of CTC enumeration on lung cancer patients in terms of rapid evaluation of chemotherapy effect in real time and monitoring lung cancer recurrence. A large scale of study which is necessary for further validation of the significance of lung cancer CTC is being performed.

“…CTCs were detected in 47 cases (71.21%), and the detection rate was higher than in similar studies using other detection methods (Wu et al, 2009;Zhou et al, 2010). Furthermore, none of the 20 patients in the control group were found to be CTCpositive, indicating that the CTC detection system has high sensitivity and specificity.…”

“…Although SCLC is often referred to as a neuroendocrine tumor, it is an epithelial tumor that co-expresses neural, endocrine, and epithelial markers 37 and so as we show, the latter can be exploited for detec- 38 A second preliminary study of lung cancer patients conducted using unvalidated manual technology and where just 13 patients had SCLC, found CTCs in a similar proportion of patients to that reported here but with smaller numbers than we observed. 39 To our knowledge this is the first report on CellSearch technology applied to patients with SCLC. We demonstrate detection of CTCs in the majority of patients, and in abundance compared with other types of cancer.…”

As shown in table 4, CTCs were more likely to show up in peripheral blood in III/IV lung cancer patients than I/II patients using samples collected from all their time points, especially using post-treatment samples (OR= 4.86 [2.29,10.29], p < 0.0001) ( Figure 3).…”
