“…This area lies within the Northern Rocky Mountain and Montana Valley and Foothill Prairies Ecoregions (Woods et al 1999) and is characterized by broad intermontane valleys interspersed with isolated mountain ranges. The geology is a complex mixture of predominately Tertiary and Cretaceous sedimentary rocks with localized intrusions of Tertiary volcanics, Mississippian limestone, Proterozoic quartzite, and Archaean gneiss and schist; Pleistocene glacial deposits are locally abundant at higher elevations (Ruppel et al 1993, Ruppel 1999, Lonn et al 2000, Skipp and Janecke 2004. The climate is semiarid and continental.…”
