Preliminary Findings on the Use of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment: Outcomes During the Formation of the Practice-Based Research Network, DO-Touch.NET

Abstract: These preliminary results suggest that for adults, OMT is predominantly used for managing musculoskeletal pain conditions and is effective for short-term symptom relief. Continued surveillance of DO-Touch.NET member practice outcomes may help identify priorities for osteopathic research and define evidence-based standards for OMT practice and training.

“…Indeed, there are no existing studies on dose-response effects of OMT, nor are there any recommendations or studies on the optimal frequency of OMT. The only available data are descriptive and refer to the frequency of treatment in current practice [29]. Our choice for monthly treatments relied on expert opinions.…”

“…Second, this systematic data collection allows us to characterize the IM treatments most frequently offered for patients with stress and other psychological issues. 35 Stress, Depression, and Quality of Life Despite geographical differences, remarkable similarities were seen across sites in psychological patient-reported outcomes of the entire IM cohort. Perceived stress was consistently high in our population (mean ¼ 5.9, SD ¼ 3.29) compared with national norms.…”

“…3 The design of similar studies in the future may be improved by data arising from practice-based research networks (PBRN) that have recently been developed in the American osteopathic profession. The Doctors of Osteopathy Treating with OMM: determining its Usefulness in Current Healthcare (DOTouch.NET Network) 4 5 have the potential to collect large volumes of clinical data on patient encounters, especially those related to palpatory findings associated with somatic dysfunctions, the use of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) and clinical outcomes described by patients. PBRN may document characteristics of OMT-responders for specific conditions and may help future investigators to select different techniques applied to the same anatomical area that may be associated with different clinical outcomes on patients with similar clinical conditions.…”
