Preliminary evaluation of the short‐term outcomes of polytetrafluoroethylene mesh for pelvic organ prolapse

Abstract: Aim Tension‐free vaginal mesh (TVM) surgery using synthetic polypropylene (PP) soft mesh had spread rapidly. However, the frequency of mesh‐related postoperative complications had increased, and PP was banned in April 2019. In Japan, however, transvaginal surgery using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) mesh had been approved. In this study, we evaluated the clinical outcome and quality of life (QOL) of the postoperative course using PP mesh and PTFE mesh (named “ORIHIME™”) in a combination surgery for utero‐sacra… Show more

“…There were two main procedures for vaginal surgeries: reconstructive (in two subgroups, including repair with natural tissue [ 17 , 19 , 20 , 23 , 24 , 31 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 60 , 61 , 63 , 64 , 65 , 66 ] ( Table 2 ) and repair with mesh [ 7 , 9 , 12 , 21 , 25 , 26 , 29 , 32 , 35 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 , 55 , 62 , 67 , 68 , 69 , 78 , 82 , 83 , 85 ]) ( Table 3 ) and obliterative surgeries [ 18 , 27 , 60 , 71 , 72 , 73 , 86 ] ( Table 4 ). In one study, obliterative surgery and sacrospinous fixation in older postmenopausal women were compared, and the QoL was better in the sacrospinous group [ 18 ].…”

“…Proline mesh, however, is no longer used worldwide due to its various complications, and it is therefore necessary to consider performing sacrocolpopexy more safely by utilizing other, improved types of mesh. For example, in Japan, PTFE mesh has been introduced as a new type of mesh, and its use has been reported 10 . As a further advantage of this technique, flap filling not only fills the dead space, but it also keeps the distance between the bowel resection site and the mesh itself, which is thought to help prevent the occurrence of mesh complications.…”

“…Після розсмоктування синтетичних ниток обсяг стороннього матеріалу, що зберігається в організмі, зменшується на 60 %. Тому основні переваги сіток, що частково розсмоктуються, це зменшення маси сітки, великий розмір пор і більша відстань між волокнами, що сприяє утворенню гнучкої «рубцевої сітки», а не ригідної «рубцевої пластини», і в організмі жінки залишається менш ніж 40 % первісного матеріалу сітки [15].…”
