Preliminary evaluation of near-infrared vein visualization technology in the screening of palatal blood vessels

Abstract: BackgroundAvoidance from palatal blood vessel rupture is a major concern during the palatal soft tissue graft surgery. There is no defined chair-side and case-specific palatal blood vessel detection approach to facilitate the harvesting process. The objective of this pilot study is to assess the feasibility of a near-infrared vein visualization system in the screening process of palatal blood vessels.Material and MethodsAn extraoral vein visualization device (AccuVein AV400) was applied to a total of 304 hemi-… Show more

“…Several approaches have been proposed for detecting blood vessels; their comparison is summarized in Table 1 . The vein visualization device [7] is generally used for screening the skin’s surface. The device emits near-infrared light (wavelength: 785 nm) and receives the light reflected from the skin’s surface.…”

“…To improve the quality of color Doppler images, the needle must be inserted into the human body to vibrate the local tissue. Recently, the near-infrared vein visualization device was developed for real-time visualization of superficial vessels under the skin [6] [8] ; near-infrared light (wavelength: ~785 nm) is used to penetrate the skin and blood vessels and is partially absorbed at avascular locations but not at vascular locations. Using the difference in absorption between the vascular and avascular locations, the device determines the location of blood vessels.…”

“…Medical visualization technology is a three-dimensional model. It can spontaneously perform quantitative and qualitative analysis of the target [16], thus providing clearer images and facilitating functional analysis [17]. Yue (2017) studied the relationship between three-dimensional reconstruction and fluid mechanics with the formation and progression of atherosclerotic plates [18].…”
