Preliminary design and performance analysis of a solar-powered unmanned seaplane

Abstract: A solar-powered unmanned seaplane is proposed as a new strategy to avoid the challenges faced in a long nonstop solar-powered flight, and is especially designed for sea surveillance mission, like resource exploration, environmental monitoring, and observation of animal migration. A preliminary design of the solar-powered unmanned seaplane is carried out while its flight performance is analyzed later. The conceptual design of a twin-tail boom with large aspect ratio wings and buoyancy system is put forward. Aer… Show more

“…Daily endurance of solar-powered seaplane as a function of date and latitude was investigated by Lou. 15 Implications on the size of low altitude solar-powered UAV design for different cities were explored by Rajendran and Smith. 16 Advances in solar cells and battery technologies were surveyed by many authors such as Safyanu, 17 Abbe and Smith, 18 Rajendran and Smith, 19 and Gao et al 20 In this work, solar aircraft energy balance is evaluated and technological forecasts are synthesized in order to assess potential temporal and geographical limitations of HAPS.…”

“…Due to the high altitude at which many airplanes operate, and many relatively flat areas they provide, PV technologies are thus considered as an interesting option for power generation. Studies of solar-powered airplanes have demonstrated that sufficient energy can be generated to operate on solar energy alone, and over extended periods of time, small unmanned and manned aircraft [ 178 , 187 , 190 , 191 , 192 ]. Other studies have demonstrated that solar power has the potential to supply the needed electricity on commercial planes during the entire flight, which is of the order of hundreds of watts [ 181 , 182 ].…”

“…Once the buoyancy point moves to the center of gravity of the aircraft, the pitch angle and water resistance reach peak values, forming an initial resistance peak, then both gradually decrease. The speed in this stage is between 25% and 50% of the takeoff velocity [5].…”
