In the recent years, engineered nanoparticles (NPs) such as PLGA or poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid, have raised a substantial interest due to their possible medical applications in vaccination, diagnostic imaging procedures, cancer therapy or sustained delivery of drugs. The main aim of the present work is to evaluate key oxidative stress parameters in several organs following NPs administration in an animal model. Our data shows that acute oral administration of PLGA NPs induces a change in the antioxidant status in both rat liver and spleen, but may not induce oxidative stress damage to cell structures such as lipid or protein oxidation.

We present a case of type I negative pressure pulmonary edema in a healthy 17-year-old boy who underwent an emergent appendectomy under general anesthesia. The particularity of our case revolves around the administration of meperidine for perioperative shivering, along with other anesthetic risk factors, which may have served as the trigger of type I negative pressure pulmonary edema.We present the pathophysiological mechanisms, the formulation of clinical and paraclinical diagnosis and the principles of intensive care therapy. This was the first such case experienced in our practice, with a remarkable learning opportunity.Negative pressure pulmonary edema (NPPE) is an acute, potentially life threatening, uncommon perioperative pathological entity. Two clinical types have been described: type I NPPE, associated with acute airway obstruction, and type II NPPE, associated with chronic partial upper airway obstruction. An early differential diagnosis between various pulmonary edema conditions in critically ill patients and a prompt recognition of high risk of acute morbidity are crucial in certain circumstances. We present a case of type I NPPE in a healthy 17-year-old boy who underwent an emergent appendectomy under general anesthesia. Experimental part Study case presentationA 17-year-old male patient without medical history presented with acute appendicitis. After evaluation in the emergency department, he was admitted for emergency appendectomy. Oxidative stress is considered to have an important role in the pathogenesis of many inflammatory diseases. This investigation sought to determine whether the appliance of etiologic factors for temporomandibular joint disorder is associated with modified values of oxidative stress as measured by biomarkers in plasma. A case-control study design was used to compare oxidative stress biomarkers (malondialdehyde and glutathione) in plasma from Wistar rats with different etiologic factors (biomechanical stress, estrogen hormones and emotional stress), compared to non-temporomandibular joint controls. Etiologic factors were applied in five groups (n=10) of mature female Wistar rats, individually (biomechanical stress, estrogen hormones and emotional stress) in three groups or in combination for two groups (biomechanical stress-emotional stress and biomechanical stress-emotional stress). No factor applied for the control group. Blood samples were taken after 30 and 60 days of experiment. Malondialdehyde and glutathione levels in plasma were evaluated. The most important modifications in malondialdehyde levels were recorded for the fifth group (biomechanical stress-emotional stress) where values increased significantly from 30 to 60 days plasma analysis (p = 0.003). No statistical differences were recorded in glutathione plasmatic levels between control and experimental groups at 30 days analysis. At 60 days, glutathione plasmatic evaluation recorded higher values than control for all experimental groups. Our findings in this rat experimental model, clearly indicate that biomechanical stress, estrogen hormones and emotional stress, have an impact on oxidative stress development and consequently on the functionality of the temporomandibular joint in rats. Moreover combined actions of these factors, increase the oxidative stress phenomena on temporomandibular joint in rats.
