Preliminary data demonstrate the Geriatric Surgery Verification program reduces postoperative length of stay

Abstract: Objectives/Background The Geriatric Surgery Verification (GSV) Program promotes clinical standards aimed to optimize the quality of surgical care delivered to older adults. The purpose of this study was to determine if preliminary implementation of the GSV Program standards improves surgical outcomes. Design Prospective study with cohort matching. Setting Data from a single institution compared with a national data set cohort. Participants All patients aged ≥75 years undergoing inpatient operations between Jan… Show more

“…There are studies which show how a geriatric co-management (including both preoperative and postoperative care) in older patients undergoing cancer-related surgery is associated with a reduction of LOS [ 80 ] and a lower 90-day postoperative mortality [ 81 ]. As a result of this, individualizing interventions in the CRC elderly population undergoing elective surgery could boost the benefits of ERAS programs, which may be gained by CGA-guided care and a geriatric liaison or co-management.…”

“…These data demonstrate that dissemination of integrated care models through collaborations of geriatrics and surgery teams and implementation of evidence-based geriatric surgery standards (e.g., the American College of Surgeons Geriatric Surgery Verification Program [41][42][43][44] ) in all U.S. hospitals is urgently needed to improve geriatric surgical care and reduce poor outcomes and costly preventable complications. While there is substantial evidence 6,[15][16][17] including OSCAR program data to support the critical role of geriatrics-focused care and standards in older adults undergoing major surgery [3][4][5][6] and increased awareness about this urgent need, 5 there is a paucity of research evaluating best practices for how to effectively integrate evidence-based geriatrics standards into routine surgical practice.…”

“…The Geriatric Surgery Verification Program led by the American College of Surgeons outlines preoperative vulnerabilities that put older adults at greater risk for poor surgical outcomes, including impaired functional status and mobility. Prehabilitation programs are an obvious choice when it comes to optimizing high-risk vulnerable older adults prior to surgery.…”
