Preliminary conceptual model of the Arjuno Welirang hydrogeological system, and comparison with the Bromo Tengger: An illustration of the hydrogeological systems diversity in volcanic areas

Abstract: While basaltic volcanic aquifers are well described in the literature, andesitic groundwater systems are less studied. Nevertheless, these aquifers supply a large population in all the subduction areas, where this volcanism mainly occurs. In Indonesia, the growing needs of the population induce an increase of the pressure on such aquifers. We present in this paper the case study of the Arjuno-Welirang, and compare it with a well-known hydrogeological system, the Bromo-Tengger. Based on geological, geomorpholog… Show more

“…The existence of Arjuno-Welirang is associated with geothermal potential. Geothermal manifestations are found in the form of Plupuh crater fumarole, which can be found at the top, while hot springs can be found in Padusan and Cangar, which are bicarbonate-type (Baud et al, 2021;Maryanto et al, 2020). The series of rocks that make up Mount Arjuno-Welirang consists of volcanic breccia, lava, tufan breccia and tuff (Santosa & Suwarti, 1992).…”

“…Volcanic rocks have complex variations and characteristics in terms of shape, grain size, mineral content, and distribution (Rüpke et al, 2002;Schaefer and Kattenhorn, 2004;Pratama et al, 2018). Hydrogeology systems in volcanic settings result from various interactions and processes that are influenced by the characteristics of minerals and rocks (Delcamp et al, 2016;Baud et al, 2021). However, the study of the geological context of hydrogeological system occurrences is not given specific consideration.…”

“…This plays a vital role, and sustainable management is necessary. It requires aquifer configuration, hydrogeochemical and hydro-isotope data, groundwater fluctuations, usage, and quality (Hadian et al, 2016;Toulier et al, 2019;Baud et al, 2021).…”
