Preheated (Heat-Assisted) Clinching Process for Al/CFRP Cross-Tension Specimens

Abstract: Effects of processing parameters on preheated (heat-assisted) clinching process to join aluminum alloy 5052-H32 (AA5052) and thermoplastic carbon-fiber-reinforced-plastic (TP-CFRP) sheets for cross-tension (CT) specimens were first studied. Preheating was critical since brittle TP-CFRP could be softened to avoid fracturing or cracking during clinching process. Four processing parameters, including punching force, die depth, heating mode, and heating temperature, were considered. Quasi-static tests and microsco… Show more

“…In the finite element model, the upper sheet was 1.5mm 5052 aluminum alloy sheet and the lower sheet was 1mm Q235 steel sheet. Their basic mechanical properties are shown in Table 1 [22][23][24]. The quality of the clinching joints depends on the flow of the sheet metal.…”

“…Many studies on the hybrid connection between light alloy and fiber-reinforced materials have been conducted by many scholars. SPR [10,28,29], MC [30][31][32][33], and other processes [34][35][36] are used to join hybrid structures composed of light metal materials and fiber-reinforced composite materials. In some work on the connection of composite structures by SPR [10,28,29], a numerical simulation model of the SPR process between CFRP and aluminium alloy plates was established [28].…”

“…According to its results, this method is beneficial to reduce the damage of CFRP sheets, contributing to the strength of the hybrid structure. On the other hand, Lin et al [31,32] used the MC technique to join the composite structure between Al5052-H32 and thermoplastic CFRP. The process conditions were also determined, verifying the practicality of the MC technique.…”

“…Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) can be used as an excellent lightweight replacement for steel in mechanical industries [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ] due to its outstanding specific strength characteristics [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ], as well as its sound damping characteristics [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ]. The dynamic response of a CFRP structure varies with the changes in structural stiffness with respect to the direction of the carbon fiber; hence, CFRP is anisotropic in nature due to the different orientations of the carbon fiber [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ].…”
