Date palm pollen storage is becoming more and more necessary due to the asynchronous maturation of male and female flowers that, frequently, occurs, during the last years in Tunisia. However, little information is available on the pollen viability and favorable storage conditions. The present study aims to compare date palm pollen storage at three temperatures (25 ± 2°C, 4° C and −20°C) and to evaluate the aptitude of pollens from different geographical origins to conserve their in vitro germinative potency. Results revealed that, after the fresh pollen, the overall pollen in vitro germinations were significantly improved with storage at −20°C (41.04 ± 23.84%) and 4°C (20.07 ± 22.19%) compared with storage at 25 ± 2°C (4.27 ± 4.39%). For each used temperature, the in vitro germination was not affected by the pollen origins. In fact, almost similar reactions were observed for fresh and stored pollen at 25 ± 2°C and 4°C. On the other hand, pollen stored at −20°C had reacted independently from the origin. However, the aptitude of pollens from similar origins to preserve their in vitro germination potencies under the three storage temperatures reveals some similarities. Physiologic characteristics of pollens were not related to the geographic origins and did not significantly affect their aptitude for storage

Many recent studies in the field of cosmetics have focused on organically sourced substances. Products made from organic materials are safe, high quality, cruelty-free, and more effective than those made from synthetic materials. Many organic compounds are known to be physiologically active in humans and have an extended storage capacity and long-lasting environmental effects. Agro-industrial waste has recently increased substantially, and the disposal of date palm waste, often performed in primitive ways such as burning, is harmful to the environment. Fruit processing industries generate over 10% of the total date seed waste daily, which could be converted into useful food products. Date fruit and seed are rich in sugar, vitamins, fiber, minerals, and phenolic compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that significantly promote human and animal health. This waste is rich in bioactive compounds and essential oils used in many kinds of food, medicine, and cosmetics. Most active cosmetic ingredients come from natural sources such as fruit, fish, and dairy, and recent research shows that date extract and seed oil help to reduce melanin, eczema, acne, and dry patches, while increasing skin moisture and elasticity. This review details the bioactive compounds and nutraceutical properties of date fruit and seed, and their use as cosmetic ingredients.

Nutrition present in fruits within a balanced diet plays an indispensable role in maintaining and promoting human health. Fruits such as date palm are rich sources of a balanced nutrition because of the high content of bioactive products. Cultivation of date palm is extremely rare in Malaysia and only available in small-scale farms. There is a potential for Malaysia to cultivate its own dates and not rely on imports in the future. The present review provides information on the nutritional values of dates, as well as recent trends and future prospects in date palm cultivation. Dates may be considered an almost ideal food, providing a wide range of essential nutrients and potential health benefits. This detailed information on nutritional and health promoting components of dates will enhance readers' knowledge and appreciation for the use of dates in their daily diet, and their promising business potential will benefit the economy.
