Prehabilitation before elective coronary artery bypass grafting surgery: a scoping review protocol

Abstract: Objective:The objective of this scoping review is to identify and map existing preoperative interventions, referred to as prehabilitation, in adult patients at home awaiting coronary bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. This scoping review also seeks to examine the feasibility and patient experiences in order to inform clinical practice and underpin a future systematic review.Introduction:As patients age, comorbidities become more common. “…Surgical revascularization, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), has been shown to have a survival benefit over medical therapy in many patients and provides symptom relief thereby improving their functional capacity and quality of life [1,2]. Cardiac surgery inevitably causes varying degrees of physiologic stress, affecting multiple organ systems, and psychological strain [3,4,5 ▪▪ ]. Patients referred for CABG increasingly present with advanced age, frailty and important comorbidities, which may contribute to complications in the postoperative phase [3,5 ▪▪ ].…”

“…Cardiac surgery inevitably causes varying degrees of physiologic stress, affecting multiple organ systems, and psychological strain [3,4,5 ▪▪ ]. Patients referred for CABG increasingly present with advanced age, frailty and important comorbidities, which may contribute to complications in the postoperative phase [3,5 ▪▪ ]. Frailty, independent of chronological age, is an important risk factor not only for mortality and morbidity after CABG, but also for prolonged lengths of stay and nonhome discharge [6–8].…”
