Pregnancy Outcomes after ZIKV Infection in French Territories in the Americas

Abstract: Among pregnant women with symptomatic, PCR-confirmed ZIKV infection, birth defects possibly associated with ZIKV infection were present in 7% of fetuses and infants. Defects occurred more frequently in fetuses and infants whose mothers had been infected early in pregnancy. Longer-term follow-up of infants is required to assess any manifestations not detected at birth. (Funded by the French Ministry of Health and others; ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT02916732 .).

“…Symptomatic infections are characterized by a maculopapular rash, mild fever, asthenia, pruritus, arthralgia, retro-orbital cephaleas, myalgia, conjunctivitis or conjunctival hyperemia, and/or edema of the extremities. [34][35][36] Rare severe neurological complications might occur, particularly Guillain-Barré syndrome, which may be a life-threatening condition in pregnant women (prevalence of 1.23% (95% CI, 1.17%-1.29%) in general infected-population). 37,38 However, pregnancy is not associated with more frequent or more severe maternal complications.…”

“…A maternal ZIKV infection is estimated to result in birth defects in 5–13% of cases, with higher rates of anomalies when infection occurs earlier in pregnancy;(39, 40) however, this should be taken only as an estimate given the clinical difficulty in detection of lesser injuries and the large number of asymptomatic infections. Although the incidence of ocular and subtle brain injuries first detected after birth is unknown, it can be inferred from large case series.…”

“…A partir de finales de 2015, una nueva epidemia se extendió por América del Sur y el Caribe, a partir del nordeste de Brasil. En esta ocasión, se observó un aumento de la incidencia de microcefalia congénita que condujo a caracterizar mejor la infección congénita por el VZ [67][68][69][70][71][72] . En Martinica y Guadalupe, la seroprevalencia al final de la epidemia era del orden del 45-55%.…”
