Pregnancy and Infants’ Outcome: Nutritional and Metabolic Implications

Abstract: Pregnancy is a complex period of human growth, development, and imprinting. Nutrition and metabolism play a crucial role for the health and well-being of both mother and fetus, as well as for the long-term health of the offspring. Nevertheless, several biological and physiological mechanisms related to nutritive requirements together with their transfer and utilization across the placenta are still poorly understood. A particular focus is placed on exploration of the developmental origins of obesity, adiposity, and related health outcomes due to the major public health importance of these outcomes and because of particularly convincing evidence of programming effects on adiposity and obesity [3,4,5,6]. The EarlyNutrition project is coordinated by the Dr. von Hauner Children's Hospital at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich and has a budget of EUR 11.1 million (about USD 15.3 million) funded by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission (grant No.…”
