Pregnancy after direct intraperitoneal insemination

Abstract: Direct intraperitoneal insemination (DIPI) and superovulation are simple procedures which may together represent a good alternative to gamete intra-Fallopian transfer (GIFT) in infertile women with patent Fallopian tubes. In the present study, pregnancy occurred in 25 of 96 couples (26%) and six (24%) of these aborted. The pregnancy rate for all cycles was 19.6% and multiple pregnancies were found in six of 25 (24%) patients. We observed no ectopic pregnancy. The combination of these techniques is concluded to… Show more

“…As, according to earlier studies, the estimated spontaneous pregnancy rate is only 1 to 2% per cycle among couples with unexplained infertility (4), our superovulation treatment protocol must be considered quite satisfactory. Our results are comparable to previously reported studies (12,13). However, because the incidence of multiple pregnancies after superovulation treatment was undesirably high, the superovulation treatment regimen has to be changed towards a more cautious low dose direction.…”

“…Sperm preparation involves one‐ or two centrifugation steps, followed by a swim‐up procedure in culture medium. The spermatozoa are injected into the pouch of Douglas (cul‐de‐sac) through the posterior fornix of the vagina, after confirming the needle's position in the peritoneal cavity, either by ultrasonography (Seracchioli et al. 1991; Turhan et al.…”

“…The feasibility of intraperitoneal insemination in several species, including the cow, leaves the way open for using the transperitoneal route (Hunter, 1988). Intraperitoneal insemination is a method for assisted reproduction in humans (Crosignani et al, 1991;Karlström et al, 1991;Seracchioli et al, 1991), often giving better results than intrauterine insemination (Evans et al, 1991;Ajossa et al, 1997;Misao et al, 1997). However, very few studies have been performed in cattle.…”
