Preference and subjective evaluation of washed fabric hand using conjoint analysis

Abstract: The hand of washed fabrics can be changed by varying the laundry detergent ingredients and the properties of washing liquid. The ingredients brought by changes to the hand of fabrics can be considered by subjective assessment. Three types of cotton fabrics were washed in a drum-type washer with 16 different laundry detergents, which are based on profiles derived from a fractional factorial design. A questionnaire method was used to evaluate fabrics washed by 16 different detergent combinations. Zeolite was the… Show more

“…In most sensory studies on fabric hand, 4851 the number of samples would not exceed 20 for trained panelists or experts. In the current study, due to the fact that (1) the panelists are without any expertise and (2) they are required to take part in two different sensory tests in three replicated sessions, which is indeed a time-consuming work, the number of samples involved in the study should be limited, or it could easily make the panelists tired and less sensitive.…”

“…According to many sensory studies on textile products working with untrained assessors, the number of participants is often controlled around 20 and it rarely exceeds thirty. 48,49,52 In the current study, for the sake of result representativeness and research efficiency, fabric hand assessments were carried out by 20 untrained participants (11 females and 9 males), aged from 25 to 41 years. They were recruited from the faculty and the students of non-textile specialties of the university.…”

“…Nogueira (2011) [16] later compared Portuguese and French lexicons, and added to their studies visual sensory evaluation. Other studies of quantitative sensory analysis in textiles have been done by other researchers [1,4,6,[17][18][19][20][21][22] however, only Portuguese research made a comparative study with two trained panels, one Portuguese and one French, thus validating the methodology. Nagamatsu et al [23] used the same methodology employed by Philippe et al [24] and Nogueira et al [25] and developed a Brazilian lexicon for the selection and training of a sensory panel and later for the evaluation of textile samples.…”
