Preface to the special issue: the role of geomatics in hydrogeological risk

Abstract: In accordance with recent studies, most of the observed natural hazards throughout the globe are related to the dynamics of hydrological variability. This determines the fundamental importance of studies related to hydrogeological risk assessment, in terms of both prevention and mitigation of damages; science shall provide the modelling and forecasting tools in order to support the management of natural phenomena. Geomatic technologies have a leading role in this context, as they model the physical elements in… Show more

“…Geographic information systems (GIS) can validly support decision-makers with data analysis (Martin et al, 2016;Piragnolo et al, 2014). The information derived from close-and far-range sensing using lidar and/or optical data is used for modelling vegetation, geomorphology (Rutzinger et al, 2018), erosion, hazards (Pirotti et al, 2015). The combination of lidar-derived features and machine learning can obtain positive results that exceed the traditional approaches.…”

“…Thanks to the continuous increase of applications using geo-spatial data (Guarnieri et al 2015;Habib et al 2005;Pirotti et al 2015;Remondino, Guarnieri, and Vettore 2005), in the last decades several mobile mapping systems (MMSs) have been developed, mostly based on the use of terrestrial or airborne vehicles (Chiang, Noureldin, and El-Sheimy 2003;Kraus and Pfeifer 1998;Pirotti et al 2014;Remondino et al 2011;Toth 2001;Toth and Grejner-Brzezinska 1997), equipped with remote sensing instruments such as laser scanners and cameras.…”

“…Multispectral cameras mounted on RPAS allow custom deployment for multi-band imagery over areas of interest. RPAS is therefore a suitable candidate to fill the gaps in the timeline where satellite imagery is not available (Pirotti et al, 2015), be it for long revisit times, for cloud cover or for a combination of both (Pirotti et al, 2017).…”
