There is an increasing need to selectively bind, determine, preconcentrate, or filter compounds frequently present at very low concentration levels in a wide variety of complex matrices. Among other strategies, this need has been addressed by MIPs serving as tailorable synthetic molecular recognition motifs. While the generation of MIPs appears synthetically straightforward, their preparation for the determination of toxic, infectious, rare, or unstable species remains a challenge due to the requirement of using the target species as the actual template during synthesis. A viable alternative is, therefore, replacing the target/template by an appropriate surrogate emulating its size, shape, and surface functionality. Functional polymer materials mimicking biological recognition processes are highly relevant and a vital research field with molecularly imprinted materials at the forefront of this development. Next to the fundamental scientific aspects related to these materials, their practical relevance is reflected in a plethora of applications ranging from biomimetic sensors and assays to selective preconcentration and filtration taking advantage of their selective recognition properties. This review aims to highlight recent advances and innovative strategies toward the development of polymers with selective recognition properties prepared via surrogate templates. Advantages and disadvantages of these strategies are discussed and contrasted by selected examples highlighting the features of such materials addressing specifically such delicate templates.

Two recently synthesized and developed steroid hormones, prednisone and prednisolone, have given promise of having all the advantages of their precursors, cortisone and hydrocortisone, while obviating many of the undesirable side-effects of the older preparations.1,2 These side-effects, which were noticeable even with the short-term use of the older preparations, included sodium and water retention, potassium depletion, moon facies, and hypertension.Prednisone is an analogue of cortisone, whereas prednisolone is a similar analogue of hydrocortisone. They are obtained by the dehydrogenation of the carbon atoms in Positions 1 and 2 of the steroid nucleus, resulting in a double bond between C1 and C2 ( Fig.).Clinically, they appear to have from three to five times the effect of cortisone and from two to four times the effect of hydrocortisone.3,4 There appears to be little difference between the clinical effectiveness or dosage of prednisone and of prednisolone.3-5Therefore, we decided, as a matter of simplification, to use prednisone exclusively when streoid therapy was indicated for allergic conditions in this series of patients. /-/YOA?oca¿?T/ja/v£-/ /v/JO/vc f=A?£D/V/SOí o/ve Several reports on the use of these newer steroids in the treatment of allergic con¬ ditions have recently appeared. Most of these have concerned themselves with adult pa¬ tients. Most of the patients treated were on long-term therapy. For instance, Criep 3 reports on 18 children out of 96 patients treated. Arbesman and Ehrenreich4 re¬ ported on 11 children out of 101 patients. Brown and Seideman reported on the use of these hormones in 157 patients with hay fever or allergic rhinitis but did not specify how many children were treated. More recently, Siegel and associates 8 reported on the use of prednisone in the treatment of allergic disorders in 16 children.The purpose of this report is to detail our experience using prednisone in 85 chil¬ dren with acute allergic manifestations and to emphasize not only its effectiveness but its great value and safety when used pri¬ marily for short-term therapy. The Schering Corporation supplied the prednisone (Meticorten) used in this study.

The Management of the Acute Attack of Asthma in Childhood

A number of reports 1-4 have appeared in the literature attesting to the great value of the steroids in the alleviation of the acute asthmatic attack in children. There is no question that such attacks are relieved by steroids with dramatic promptness in most cases, even when other methods fail. With the use of these hormones, the number of such children developing status asthmaticus requiring hospitalization has been very markedly reduced.4 This is not to say, however, that the time-tried and proven methods of treating the acute asthmatic attack in children have been displaced. Indeed, on the contrary, they need reemphasis so that the physician does not needlessly embark on the use of these powerful and potentially dangerous hormones without initially carrying out many other important and beneficial procedures. In this connection, one should note a recent report 5 on the immediate therapy of the acute attack of asthma comparing the use of epinephrine hypodermically with orally and intravenously administered prednisolone, which indicated that epinephrine is much more rapidly effec¬ tive against asthma than prednisolone given either by the oral or intravenous route.There was no indication from the data in that study that prednisolone and epinephrine potentiated each other's effect on the asthmatic attack when given together.The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to recapitulate the orthodox and standard methods of treating the acute attack of asthma in children and to indicate the proper and important place of the steroids in this therapeutic regimen. ManagementThe magement of the child with an acute attack of asthma has been fairly well standardized and can be summarized under the following headings:1. Bed Rest and Environment.-The child with an acute attack of asthma should be at bed rest in a room with an even tempera¬ ture of about 70 F. In the presence of a respiratory infection, recovery is much faster under these conditions. In some cases associated with respiratory infection, addi¬ tional humidification of the room and steam inhalations are desirable. Most asthmatics are sensitive to house dust or are aggravated by the mechanical irritation of dust, lint, and fuzzy particles. For this reason, the bedroom should be as dust-free and lint-free as possible. Despite instructions for this purpose parents frequently become careless. and this is an opportune time for the physi¬ cian to recheck the precautions for the preparation of a dust-free bedroom.
