Predistortion technique for cross-coupled filters and its application to satellite communication systems

Abstract: This paper presents a novel adaptive predistortion technique for general cross-coupled microwave/RF filters with improved insertion loss and group-delay equalization. The method enables many potential applications of an almost abandoned technique, and permits a lower implementation technology to emulate the performance of a higher filter. 10-4-4 filters were built and tested at-and-band to verify the validity of the new method. The impact to satellite communication channels was also analyzed. Another novel con… Show more

“…The coupling matrix formalism is extensively used for the design of RF/microwave passive filters based on electromagnetically coupled-resonator circuit networks [1][2][3][4]. In more-advanced formulations, it has even been employed as the theoretical basis of pre-distorted bandpass filters with improved in-band flatness (i.e.…”

“…In more-advanced formulations, it has even been employed as the theoretical basis of pre-distorted bandpass filters with improved in-band flatness (i.e. increased effective quality factor) [3]. However, the narrow-band nature of the coupling matrix approach sets a limitation to adequately model broad-band electrical features.…”

“…DOI: 10.21883/PJTF.2023. 10.55432.19541 Для разделения близко расположенных каналов в спутниковых системах связи требуются СВЧ-фильтры с узкой полосой пропускания и высокой крутизной склонов амплитудно-частотной характеристики (АЧХ) [1]. При этом устройства должны быть миниатюрными, иметь малые потери в полосе пропускания и стабильность характеристик при изменении температуры.…”

“…The basic idea of predistortion consists of using the a priori information of the finite Q of the resonators to alter the lossless transfer function in such a way that the ideal response is recovered when dissipation is included [9][10] [11]. As stated above, the dissipation effects can be modeled by a shift of the imaginary axis of the complex plane, j to the right by an amount of .…”
