Predisposition to Depression: The Role of Attachment

Abstract: There is a patient group predisposed to depression on the basis of adverse early life experience. In these cases, the neurobiology of attachment offers a means of integrating findings concerning sensitization of the HPA axis in infancy, the effects of early life experience on brain development, and predisposition to depression and other psychiatric disorders. These findings have important implications for the development of interventions aimed at prevention and treatment for this patient group.

“…A 2003 literature review by Beatson and Taryan summarizes evidence showing that adverse early-life relational experiences can yield activation of the HPA axis, leading to sensitization of pathways in the brain related to depression. ey conclude that secure attachment acts as a bu er against depression, whereas insecure attachment predisposes individuals to depression and other psychiatric disorders triggered by psychosocial stress [128].…”

“…Other systems are also affected negatively. For example, having a depressed mother (whose nurturing responses are limited) alters the functioning of the hypothalamicpituitary-adrenal axis (HPA; e.g., Beatson & Taryan, 2003;see Dawson, Ashman, & Carver, 2000, for a review).…”
