Predisposing factors on the surface of the skin in persons with pityriasis versicolor

Abstract: This is a report on biochemical and physiological examinations carried out on 20 test persons who in the last 2 years had contacted and completely recovered from pityriasis versicolor and on 25 control persons of corresponding age and sex. The tests on the skin surface of the patients with pityriasis versicolor show, when compared with the corresponding control group, the following significant results: 1. Significantly more amino acids could be extracted from the skin of the pityriasis versicolor patients than… Show more

“…Here the number of cases was 22 and 42, respectively. In contrast to this result we found in an earlier examination that the degree of moistening of the skin was significantly better in the pityriasis versicolor group than in its control group [5]. This leads to the assumption that a predisposition for common warts could exclude a predisposition for pityriasis versicolor.…”

“…In a previous examination we obtained a corresponding result from the healthy skin of patients with pityriasis versicolor [5], As other earlier inDeterm ¡nation No. vestigations show, this could be due to an increase in lactic acid alone or to an increase in both lactic acid and amino acids on the surface of the skin [6].…”

“…A number of theories have been proposed to explain its prevalence in adults including variation in skin lipids, skin excretion, amino acid differences, unusual numbers of glycogen granules in the normal skin of affected patients, and a shift in the hostparasite relationship between the patient and skin flora (8, 9). Malnutrition, poor health, steroid therapy, and family history of pityriasis versicolor are predisposing factors (2, 8, 9). Climate is an important factor, as pityriasis versicolor is most prevalent in the hot and humid atmosphere of the tropics and subtropics (10).…”

“…M. globosa has been found to have high levels of esterase and lipase enzymes, which could be of pathogenic importance (7). A number of theories have been proposed to explain its prevalence in adults including variation in skin lipids, skin excretion, amino acid differences, unusual numbers of glycogen granules in the normal skin of affected patients, and a shift in the hostparasite relationship between the patient and skin flora (8,9). Malnutrition, poor health, steroid therapy, and family history of pityriasis versicolor are predisposing factors (2,8,9).…”
