Predictors of Thirst in Intensive Care Unit Patients

Abstract: Context Thirst is a pervasive, intense, and distressing symptom in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Although thirst may be avoided and/or treated, scant data are available to help providers identify patients most in need. Objectives This study was designed to identify predictors of the presence, intensity, and distress of thirst in ICU patients. Methods This descriptive cross-sectional study enrolled 353 patients from three ICUs (medical-surgical, cardiac, and neurological). To measure outcomes, patient… Show more

“…Thirst has previously been measured and described in healthy persons, 27 in patients with renal failure, [28][29][30] terminal illness, 31,32 diabetes, 33,34 in critically ill patients at intensive care unit, 35,36 and in patients with HF. 11,20 Thirst has mostly been described in research with the sensation of intensity, 11,26,28,35,[37][38][39][40][41] which refers to the strength of the thirst.…”

“…65 Two excellent review papers have recently been published on the multidimensional concept of thirst. 66,67 In a 2015 study by Stotts et al, 68 predictors of the presence, intensity, and distress of thirst in 353 ICU patients were described. Among these patients, the presence of thirst was higher for patients receiving opioids (≥ 50 mg opioid equivalents in 24 hours), furosemide (> 60 mg), and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.…”

“…Of note, only 17 patients were being treated with mechanical ventilation; thus additional research is needed in this population. The article by Stotts et al 68 is important because it delineates some of the factors that may aid in the identification of patients at increased risk for thirst.…”
