Predictors of Suboptimal Bowel Preparation Using 3-l of Polyethylene Glycol for an Outpatient Colonoscopy: A Prospective Observational Study

Abstract: This prospective study identified that constipation, male gender, obesity, and inadequate intake of PEG were significant risk factors for suboptimal bowel preparation using a 3-l PEG solution for outpatient colonoscopy. Interventions of optimized colonoscopy preparation should be targeted at these patient populations.

“…A possible explanation was that compliance with taking laxatives is poorer among men than among women (Lebwohl et al, ; Mahmood et al, ). Furthermore, constipation is considered an independent risk factor for inadequate colon preparation (Cheng et al, ), which is inconsistent with the findings of our study. One possible reason may be that we excluded patients with severe constipation from our study because patients with severe constipation are usually prescribed a laxative at the beginning of the hospital stay to avoid unsuccessful bowel preparation before colonoscopy and this procedure is not a standard recommended bowel preparation.…”

“…Because colonoscopy is costly and time consuming, these patients may be better served by having their procedure rescheduled after additional or alternative cleaning measures are put in place, helping maximize the use of endoscopy resources. In this month's issue of Digestive Diseases and Sciences, Cheng et al [7] report on their single-center, prospective study evaluating predictive factors associated with suboptimal bowel preparation using an intermediate (3L)-volume PEG solution. They studied [1400 patients with a mean age of 52.5 ± 11.1 years undergoing outpatient colonoscopic examinations mostly indicated for CRC screening or polyp surveillance in Taiwan.…”
