Predictors of short-term mortality, cognitive and physical decline in older adults in northwest Russia: a population-based prospective cohort study

Abstract: The combination of low physical function, low mid-arm muscle area, low forced expiratory volume in 1 s, anemia with hCRP levels and hBNP identified older persons at a higher risk for mortality. These predictors may be used for the development of a prediction model to detect older people who are at risk for adverse health outcomes in northwest Russia.

“…We asked for absolute numbers of participants in nutritional status categories "normal," "at risk of malnutrition," and "malnourished" and the physical frailty categories "robust," "prefrail," and "frail" 19,25,28,32e34,36,38,39,43 and mean age (AEstandard deviation) of the population. 20,24,43 Three authors provided data of more 36 or fewer 38,43 participants than included in the article. In those cases, the numbers provided by the authors were used for the meta-analysis (Table 2) and explicated in the footnotes.…”

“…Despite the general importance of anemia for public health and although Russia is by area the largest, and by population one of the most populous countries worldwide, information about the prevalence of anemia in Russia and factors associated with the occurrence of anemia in Russia has been mostly missing so far. We therefore conducted this study to assess the prevalence of anemia in a population in Russia and to explore its associations with other factors [4, 5].…”

“…The variation may be due to different screening tools and settings. The prevalence of being at risk of PEM seems to be higher than the prevalence of PEM, which indicates possible potential for preventing of PEM and its consequences [12][13][14][15]26,[36][37][38][39][40][41][42].…”
