“…The breadth of research that has assessed sexual quality is extensive and reaches into a variety of different domains. Numerous empirical articles have examined the links between sexual quality and relationship quality (Butzer & Campbell, 2008;Byers, 2005;Haavio-Mannila & Kontula, 1997;Oggins, Leber, & Veroff, 1993), infidelity (Mark, Janssen, & Milhausen, 2011;Plack, Kroger, Allen, Baucom, & Hahlweg, 2010;Shaw, Rhoades, Allen, Stanley, & Markman, 2013), body image (Daniel & Bridges, 2013;Pujols & Meston, 2009), physical health and illness (Connell, Coates, Doherty-Poirier, & Wood, 2013;Foster & Byers, 2013;Yount, 2013), childhood sexual abuse (Easton, Coohey, O'Leary, Zhang, & Hua, 2011;Meston, Lorenz, & Stephenson, 2013;Stroebel et al, 2012), and mental health (Holmberg, Blair, & Phillips, 2010;Suvak, Brogan, & Shipherd, 2012;Syme, Klonoff, Macera, & Brodine, 2013), suggesting that the quality of an individual's sexual life can be strongly linked to many other areas of individual functioning. Additionally, in sex therapy and sexual medicine, sexual quality is often used as a gauge of sexual and relationship health.…”

“…CSA is linked to other syndemic pathways including depression, substance use, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which may develop even years later and are linked synergistically to perpetuate risk behavior (Parsons et al, 2011; Rowan & Foy, 1993; Rowan et al, 1994; Stall et al, 2003). Both CSA and PTSD are associated with a host of comorbid psychological health issues in adulthood, including substance use disorders (Banducci et al, 2014a; Suvak et al, 2012), low self-esteem (Browne & Finkelhor, 1986; Ekinci & Kandemir, 2015; Payne et al, 2014), and difficulty regulating emotions including distress intolerance (Stevens et al, 2013). CSA and related psychological and health sequelae, have also been associated with HIV-related condomless sex (Banducci et al, 2014a, b; Boroughs et al, 2015).…”

“…For instance, CSA has been associated with mental health problems such as depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as substance use disorders (e.g., Browne & Finkelhor, 1986; Maniglio, 2010; Neumann, Houskamp, Pollock, & Briere, 1996; Suvak, Brogan, & Shipherd, 2012). In addition to mental health and substance abuse problems, CSA has been associated with sexual risk behavior, sexual dysfunction, and interpersonal difficulties (i.e., impaired social cognitions, emotional lability, & poor interpersonal relatedness) among adults (e.g., Neumann et al, 1996; Van Bruggen, Runtz, & Kadlec, 2006).…”

Several studies have revealed an association between CSA and sexual risk variables including unprotected sex, sex with multiple partners, and engaging in sex trading among women (Arriola, Louden, Doldren, & Fortenberry, 2005; Fargo, 2009; Gidycz, Coble, Latham, & Layman, 1993; Kaltman, Krupnick, Stockton, Hooper, & Green, 2005; Suvak et al, 2012). …”
