Predictors of Serum Vitamin D Levels in African American and European American Men in Chicago

Abstract: Vitamin D deficiency is epidemiologically linked to prostate, breast, and colon cancer. When compared with European American (EA) men, African American (AA) men have increased risk of prostate cancer, but few studies evaluate vitamin D status in AA men. The authors evaluate the biological and environmental predictors of vitamin D deficiency in AA and EA men in Chicago, Illinois, a low ultraviolet radiation environment. Blood samples were collected from 492 men, aged between 40 and 79 years, from urology clinic… Show more

“…We are using this measure as a proxy for early lifetime vitamin D deficiency or chronic deficiency in EA and AA men. We, and other investigators, have shown that the biggest determinant of serum 25-OH D level in Chicago for EA men was sun exposure (12, 35) and for AA men the major determinant was skin color. Sun exposure due to recreational activity may decline with aging whereas skin color is relatively stable.…”

“…However, previously, we demonstrated that serum vitamin D levels were associated with prostate biopsy outcome and adverse pathology after undergoing radical prostatectomy in our study group [18, 29], and this is the first study to demonstrate significant association between vitamin D intake and PCa. Compared to other work, our study has the advantage of including a large number of AA participants and men living in a low ultraviolet radiation environment who were vitamin D deficient [14, 15]. …”
