Predictors of Remission of T2DM and Metabolic Effects after Laparoscopic Roux-en-y Gastric Bypass in Obese Indian Diabetics—a 5-Year Study

Abstract: LRYGB is safe and efficacious for long-term remission of T2DM (BMI ≥ 35 kg/m(2)). In a country with the second largest population of type 2 diabetics in the world, predictors of success after surgery can help in prioritizing patients who have a greater chance to benefit from metabolic surgery.

“…The present study revealed that C-peptide level was positively associated with diabetes remission after RYGB. This result is consistent with previous studies by Lee [19,29]. It is assumed that the elevated C-peptide levels in morbidly obese diabetic patients implicate well-preserved pancreatic β cell function capable enough to compensate for the increased insulin resistance.…”

“…Age, type 2 diabetes duration, insulin requirement, preoperative BMI, and FBG, HbA1c, and Cpeptide levels were analyzed as predictors in the previous studies [7,8,[17][18][19][20][21]. Some investigators have attempted to devise scoring systems to predict the probability of diabetes remission following RYGB; these include the ABCD score by Lee et al and the DiaRem score by Still et al [21,22].…”

“…The surgical efficacy on diabetes resolution seems less prominent in the less or non-obese patients compared to the results from morbidly obese patients. )[9,14,[22][23][24][25][26][27][28]. The remission rate ranged from 24% to 84%according to the type of surgery and to the baseline characteristics of the patients as well.…”
